RIO DE JANEIRO, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese manager Antonio Oliveira has been appointed manager of Sport for the rest of the Brazilian Serie A season, the Recife-based club said on Friday.
The 42-year-old replaces compatriot Pedro da Costa, better known as Pepa, who was sacked after a 2-1 loss at Fluminense last Saturday.
"Antonio arrived in Recife on Thursday night and, on Friday afternoon, he was introduced to the players and staff," read a statement on Sport's official website.
"His signing reinforces the club's commitment and ambition for the rest of the season."
Oliveira, who will be joined by assistants Diego Favarin, Felipe Zilio, Vitor Couto and Fabio Miguel, had been out of work since parting ways with Corinthians last July.
His first match in charge of Sport will be a home clash against Cruzeiro in Brazil's top flight on Sunday. ■
